Lane was born in Sydney where he studied music from a very early age. He began piano lessons at the age of four and received classical training until the age of twenty. He has also received vocal training from renowned Australian tenor Reginald Byers.
In his youth, Lane performed the lead roles in several musical productions in Sydney and was a member of the Sydney Youth Musical Theatre society. He also appeared professionally as a backing singer for the Michael Crawford concert at the Sydney Entertainment Centre in 2000, and in a tribute concert to Freddie Mercury later that same year.
As well as being a performer, Lane is an accomplished composer and studied composition since his early teens. At age eighteen, two of his compositions were nominated for the prestigious Encore award in NSW. In fact, Lane was initially enrolled to study music at the Sydney Conservatorium, majoring in composition, until he changed his mind and withdrew to study medicine instead.
Lane is the writer and composer of The Front, a musical theatre piece about Fromelles, the bloodiest battle in ANZAC history. The Front premiered at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival in 2015, after being handpicked by Creative Director Barry Humphries and features Lane’s original music including this song titled Fromelles. With Rob Mills in the original cast, The Front is filled with soaring romantic melodies and infused with a uniquely Australian spirit.
With a strong interest in Australia’s wartime history, Lane was commissioned to write a second musical theatre piece for schools to commemorate the Centenary of ANZAC in 2018, titled Do Not Forget, Australia. It was produced and performed at 14 Australian schools.
One of Lane’s original compositions was featured at the 2013 ANZAC Day Dawn Service in Adelaide. He also appeared in The Battle of Fromelles Commemoration Film by Lifesketch Films.
Lane’s theatre credits include Street Singer in the Adelaide Festival production of ‘Mass’ by Leonard Bernstein, starring Jubilant Sykes and conducted by Kristjan Järvi, and Ted in SA Opera’s Workshop production of Cloudstreet, directed by Gale Edwards. He has also presented an original cabaret show at the 2015 Adelaide Fringe Festival, titled The Man Behind The Front. It was nominated for Adelaide Theatre Guild awards in the ‘Best Musical Production (Professional)’ and ‘Best Male Performer (Professional)’ categories.
